Sample Dialogue

Here's a sample dialogue of a startup founder pitching to a group of Vietnamese investors. Pay attention to the formality and the flow of the conversation.

Founder (Bảo): Kính chào quý vị nhà đầu tư. Tôi là Bảo, CEO của TechCare. Chúng tôi đang phát triển một ứng dụng y tế thông minh giúp kết nối bệnh nhân và bác sĩ dễ dàng hơn ở Việt Nam.

Founder (Bảo): Esteemed investors, good morning. I am Bảo, CEO of TechCare. We are developing a smart healthcare application to help connect patients and doctors more easily in Vietnam.

Investor (Ông Hùng): Chào Bảo. Vấn đề mà ứng dụng của bạn giải quyết cụ thể là gì?

Investor (Ông Hùng): Hello Bảo. What specific problem does your app solve?

Founder (Bảo): Thưa ông Hùng, hiện tại việc đặt lịch khám và tìm bác sĩ chuyên khoa ở Việt Nam còn khá khó khăn và mất thời gian. Ứng dụng của chúng tôi cung cấp hệ thống đặt lịch trực tuyến, tư vấn từ xa và hồ sơ bệnh án điện tử, giúp tiết kiệm thời gian và tăng hiệu quả.

Founder (Bảo): Mr. Hùng, currently, booking appointments and finding specialist doctors in Vietnam is quite difficult and time-consuming. Our application provides an online booking system, remote consultation, and electronic health records, saving time and increasing efficiency.

Investor (Bà Lan): Is the market for this service in Vietnam large, Bảo?

Founder (Bảo): Ms. Lan, with over 97 million people and a high smartphone penetration rate, the digital healthcare market in Vietnam has enormous growth potential. We estimate the potential market could reach 500 million USD in the next 5 years.

Investor (Ông Hùng): And what about TechCare's competitive advantage compared to other competitors?

Founder (Bảo): Our unique selling point is the integration of AI to suggest the most suitable doctor based on symptoms, as well as smart reminders and efficient medication management, creating a highly personalized user experience.

Investor (Bà Lan): What are your financial projections for the next three years? How much investment capital do you need?

Founder (Bảo): We project to achieve 15 billion VND in revenue by the end of the first year and become profitable from the second year. We are seeking 5 billion VND in investment capital to expand our development team, marketing, and penetrate the Southern market.

Investor (Ông Hùng): Thank you, Bảo. We will review your proposal carefully. We look forward to further discussions.

Founder (Bảo): Yes, I also look forward to your feedback. Thank you.

Cultural Tips

Pitching to investors in Vietnam goes beyond just the numbers and business model; cultural nuances play a significant role. Understanding and respecting these can greatly enhance your chances of success.

Firstly, relationship building (xây dựng mối quan hệ) is paramount. Vietnamese business culture often prioritizes personal connections and trust over purely transactional interactions. Don't rush straight into the pitch. Take time to engage in small talk, share a meal, or have a cup of coffee. Show genuine interest in the investors as individuals, not just as potential funders. This initial personal connection builds a foundation of trust (niềm tin), which is crucial before any serious business discussion.

Secondly, respectful communication and appropriate titles are key. Always use appropriate honorifics like 'Ông' (Mr.) or 'Bà' (Ms./Mrs.) followed by their first name or full name, or their professional title if applicable (e.g., 'Chủ tịch' for Chairman, 'Giám đốc' for Director). Maintain a polite and humble demeanor (khiêm tốn). While confidence in your product is good, over-aggressiveness or perceived arrogance can be off-putting. It’s a fine balance between showcasing your strengths and maintaining humility.

Thirdly, be prepared for indirect communication and patience. Vietnamese conversations, especially in business, can be more indirect than what you might be used to in Western contexts. An investor might not directly say "no" but rather express reservations or suggest "further consideration." Similarly, decisions might take longer than anticipated. Demonstrating patience and flexibility, while gently following up, will be appreciated. Avoid putting undue pressure, as this can be seen as disrespectful.

Finally, understand the importance of face (thể diện). Both yours and the investors' face are important. Avoid situations that could cause anyone to lose face, such as publicly challenging an investor's statement or making them feel embarrassed. Always present solutions and criticisms constructively and privately if possible. Acknowledge and appreciate the investors' time and consideration, regardless of the outcome. This shows your professionalism and respect for cultural norms.

Common Mistakes

Understanding common pitfalls can help you avoid them and make your pitch more effective in the Vietnamese context.

Mistake: Being overly aggressive or demanding in your investment ask, which can be perceived as lacking humility or respect. Example: Tôi cần 10 tỷ đồng. Quý vị phải đầu tư vào chúng tôi.

Correct: Presenting your ask clearly but with a respectful and collaborative tone. Example: Chúng tôi đang tìm kiếm 10 tỷ đồng vốn đầu tư để đẩy mạnh phát triển sản phẩm và mở rộng thị trường.

Mistake: Failing to emphasize the team's experience and chemistry, or overlooking the importance of personal connections. (Only talking about the product and numbers.)

Correct: Highlighting your team's strengths, expertise, and how well you work together, as well as showing a willingness to build rapport.

Mistake: Not addressing potential risks or challenges transparently, as investors value honesty and a realistic outlook. (Only presenting good things, ignoring risks.)

Correct: Acknowledging potential challenges and outlining how your team plans to mitigate them.

Mistake: Using overly casual language or failing to use appropriate honorifics when addressing investors.

Correct: Maintaining a formal and respectful tone, using 'kính chào' or 'thưa' and appropriate titles like 'quý vị nhà đầu tư', 'Ông/Bà'. Example: Kính chào quý vị nhà đầu tư, tôi xin phép trình bày về dự án của chúng tôi.

Mistake: Expecting immediate decisions or pushing too hard for a quick answer, which can be seen as impatient or disrespectful.

Correct: Expressing gratitude for their time and indicating readiness for further discussion, allowing them space to deliberate. Example: Cảm ơn quý vị đã dành thời gian.

B. Acknowledge their concern respectfully, thank them for their valuable input, and explain how you plan to address it or commit to looking into it further.
