For foreigners, purchasing a local SIM card (from providers like Viettel, Mobifone, or Vinaphone) upon arrival is highly recommended. These are affordable and essential for seamless communication, using navigation apps, and accessing popular ride-hailing services like Grab or Gojek. Data packages are generally generous and inexpensive, making mobile data the primary means of internet access for many.

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Zalo (a popular Vietnamese messaging app), and TikTok are deeply integrated into personal and business interactions. Proficiency in using these platforms is often key to staying connected with local friends and contacts. Prepaid SIM cards are the norm, offering flexibility and easy top-up options through various channels, including network provider apps or scratch cards.

While digital payments via mobile banking and e-wallets (like MoMo and ZaloPay) are becoming increasingly prevalent, sometimes these services require a local bank account or phone number for full functionality. When it comes to phone etiquette, Vietnamese people are generally comfortable using their phones in public spaces for calls, video calls, and social media browsing.

Common Mistakes

❌ Confusing "gọi" (to call) with "hỏi" (to ask): "Tôi hỏi điện thoại cho bạn."

✅ "Tôi gọi điện thoại cho bạn." (I'm calling you.)

❌ Using "mạng" broadly without specifying internet: "Điện thoại tôi không có mạng." (This is ambiguous and could mean no network signal, not necessarily internet.)

✅ "Điện thoại tôi không có sóng." (My phone has no signal.) / "Điện thoại tôi không vào được Internet." (My phone cannot access the Internet.)

❌ Using "di động" as a standalone noun for a mobile phone: "Tôi có di động mới."

✅ "Tôi có điện thoại di động mới." (I have a new mobile phone.)
