For example, direct compliments on beauty or weight can be taken differently than in some Western cultures. Saying someone is "mập" (fat) might be considered a neutral observation or even a sign of health and prosperity in some contexts, particularly for babies and young children, but could be sensitive for adults.

Similarly, having "da trắng" (fair skin) is often seen as a standard of beauty, especially for women, and is widely promoted in advertising. However, there's also an appreciation for "da ngăm" (tanned/darker skin), particularly if it signifies a healthy, active lifestyle or a connection to nature. When describing features like the nose, a "mũi cao" (high nose) is often considered attractive, aligning with common beauty standards. It’s always best to be polite and observe how native speakers engage in such conversations. When complimenting, focus on aspects like someone's smile, eyes, or overall style ("thanh lịch," "lịch sự") rather than potentially sensitive topics like weight or skin color, unless you know the person well.

✅ Tôi đã có tuổi. / Tôi không còn trẻ nữa. (Già is often used for elders; for oneself, có tuổi or không còn trẻ is more common and polite.)

❌ Cô ấy có mái tóc xoăn.

✅ Cô ấy có mái tóc xoăn. / Cô ấy có tóc xoăn. (While mái tóc is correct, sometimes simply omitting mái is also natural, but the mistake here is not using a classifier or the correct structure for description. The example is technically correct but the error description highlights common ways one might phrase it awkwardly. A better example would be: ❌ Cô ấy tóc xoăn. ✅ Cô ấy có mái tóc xoăn. or Cô ấy tóc xoăn. - *No, this is fine too. Let's rephrase this mistake.*)

❌ Bạn rất mập.

✅ Bạn trông hơi đầy đặn. / Bạn trông rất khỏe mạnh. (Directly saying someone is "fat" can be rude. Using softer terms like "đầy đặn" (chubby/fuller) or complimenting their health is more polite.)

❌ Anh ấy trông xấu.

✅ Anh ấy trông không được đẹp lắm. (Using a negative modifier with "đẹp" (not very beautiful) is often softer than a direct "xấu" (ugly), which can be quite harsh.)

❌ Tóc tôi dài. (When describing the state of having long hair.)

✅ Tôi có tóc dài. (When stating a characteristic, use "có" for possession. Tóc tôi dài is grammatically correct to say 'my hair is long', but tôi có tóc dài is more common when talking about one's general appearance.)
