Hair salons (tiệm làm tóc or salon tóc) often cater more to women, offering a wider range of services like elaborate styling, perms, and coloring, sometimes even manicures and pedicures. Barbershops (tiệm cắt tóc or hiệu cắt tóc), especially traditional ones, typically focus on men's haircuts, shaves, and often include ear cleaning (lấy ráy tai) and a quick face massage as part of the service, which is a unique cultural touch.

It's very common to show a picture of your desired hairstyle to the hairdresser. Don't hesitate to pull up an image on your phone! Communication with the stylist is usually friendly; they might engage in light small talk. Tipping is not mandatory or expected as it might be in some Western countries, but if you're very happy with the service, a small tip is always appreciated. Prices are usually displayed or can be inquired about upfront (bao nhiêu tiền?). ✅ While cắt means "to cut," remember more specific verbs like tỉa (to trim/thin), uốn (to perm/curl), duỗi (to straighten), nhuộm (to dye), and sấy (to blow-dry). For example, if you just want to trim your bangs, say tỉa tóc mái, not cắt tóc mái.

❌ Not specifying "a little" or "just a bit" when asking for a trim.

✅ Vietnamese people tend to be quite literal. If you just say cắt ngắn (cut short), they might cut off more than you intended. Add một chút (a little) or một tí (a tiny bit) to your request: Cắt ngắn một chút thôi. (Just cut it a little bit short.)

❌ Forgetting politeness markers like ạ/dạ or làm ơn/xin.

✅ Even in a casual setting, politeness is key. Always try to include ạ/dạ at the end of your sentences when speaking to service staff, and use làm ơn or xin for requests. For example, Xin hãy gội đầu cho tôi ạ. (Please wash my hair.)
